The value of a Colonial appointment depends upon so many circumstances besides the salary that the Secretary of State often canned judge what would be acceptable to an officer. Applicans for promotion should therefore, in their own interests, state as precisely as possible what they desire, either specifying certain appoletinents, or at least mntioning the Colonies to which they would or would not l willing to go, and the amount of salary which they think that they may reasonably expect.
